VEHICLE DATA COLLECTION AND EVENT DATA RECORDERS

Your Hyundai is equipped with many high-tech, electronically controlled systems that help ensure the smooth operation and performance you expect. These systems use computers to monitor the operation of various systems and components and help control their operation. These computerized system operations are extensive and include emission-reducing components, continuous readiness assessment of seat belt pretensioners and airbag systems, determining when seat belt pretensioner systems should deploy and airbags, then deployment and, if equipped, operate the system anti-lock braking, traction control and electric stability control to help the driver control the vehicle in difficult driving situations. These systems electronically store information that is useful to service technicians when they need to diagnose and repair these systems. Additional information is only recorded in the event of a collision that deploys the airbags or seat belt pretensioners. This type of data storage is done by devices called event data recorders (EDRs). After a crash, the airbag and seat belt pretensioner computer system, known as the Supplemental Restraint Control Module (SRSCM) or Airbag Control Unit (ACU), may record certain information. about the condition of the vehicle and how it is used. This information includes seatbelt usage data and diagnostic information about airbags or seatbelt systems at the time of the crash, and whether the ACU detected that the crash was severe enough to require a seatbelt pretensioner or airbag to be applied.

Retrieving this information requires special equipment and access to a vehicle or storage device. Hyundai will not access or share information about the accident with others, except:

or in response to an official request from the police or similar government agency, or with the consent of the vehicle owner, or if the vehicle is rented, with the lessee's consent, or in Hyundai's defense in litigation, or as required by law.

    ONLY UNLEADED FUEL

    B010A01MC-A

    !

    B010A02MC-AAT

    Use unleaded gasoline

Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 (ResearchOctane Number 91) or higher in your Hyundai vehicle.

    B010B01A-AAT

What about gasohol? Gasoline (a mixture of 90% unleaded gasoline and 10% ethanol or grain spirit) may be used in your Hyundai. However, if the engine is having trouble driving, it is recommended to use 100% unleaded gasoline. Do not use fuels with an unspecified alcohol content or alcohols other than ethanol.

    B010C01A-AAT

When using MTBE, Hyundai recommends that fuels containing MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) above 15.0% vol. (Oxygen content 2.7% by weight) should not be used in your Hyundai. Fuel containing MTBE above 15.0% vol. (Oxygen content 2.7% by weight) may reduce vehicle performance and cause vapor lock or starting difficulties.

    B010D01A-AAT

Do not use methanol Fuels containing methanol (wood spirit) should not be used in your Hyundai. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle performance and damage fuel system components.

NOTE: The Hyundai New Vehicle Limited Warranty may not cover fuel system damage or performance issues caused by the use of methanol-containing fuels or fuels containing MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) above 15.0% vol. (Oxygen content 2.7% by weight)

    !

NOTE: o Do not "fill" after

turns off automatically when refueling. o Tighten the cap until you hear a click, otherwise-

the “ ” indicator lights up. o Always check that the fuel cap is closed

securely fastened to prevent fuel spillage in the event of an accident.

Operating abroad If you intend to drive your Hyundai abroad, remember to:

o Comply with all registration and insurance laws.

o Determine if acceptable fuel is available.

    B010E01A-AAT

Gasoline for cleaner air To contribute to cleaner air, Hyundai recommends the use of gasoline with detergent added to help prevent deposits from forming in the engine. These gasolines will help the engine run cleaner and improve the performance of the emission control system.

    B020A01S-AAT

No formal break-in procedure is required for your new Hyundai for the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km). However, you can contribute to the economy and durability of your Hyundai by following the recommendations below for the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km). o Do not drive faster than 55 MPH (88 km/h).

h).o Keep the engine running while driving

(rpm or revolutions per minute) between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm.

o Use moderate acceleration. Do not start the engine by surprise or fully depress the accelerator pedal.

o During the first 200 miles (300 km), try to avoid sudden stops.

o Do not jerk the engine (in other words, do not drive so slowly in too high a gear that the engine "jumps" downshifting).

o Whether you are going fast or slow, change your speed from time to time.

o Do not allow the engine to idle for more than 3 minutes at a time.

o Do not tow a trailer for the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km) of operation.

    Register your key number

The code number is engraved on the number tag attached to the Hyundai keys. The key number tag should not be left with the keys, but should be kept in a safe place, not in the vehicle. The key number should also be written down where it can be found in an emergency. If you need extra keys or if you lose them, an authorized Hyundai dealer can make you new keys if you provide the key number.

WARNING: o An open door can be dangerous.

Before you leave (especially if there are children in the car), make sure all doors are closed and locked so that they cannot be opened from the inside. This helps ensure that the door is not accidentally opened. In addition, in conjunction with the correct use of seat belts, locking the doors helps prevent occupants from being thrown out of the car in the event of an accident.

o Always look around and avoid oncoming traffic before opening a door.

    KEYS

    B030A01A-AAT

For added convenience, the same key operates all the locks in your Hyundai. However, since the doors can be locked without a key, it is recommended that you have a spare key in case you accidentally lock the key in the car.

Infant or young child All 50 states have child restraint laws. You should know the specific requirements for your state. Child and/or infant safety seats must be properly adjusted and installed in the rear seat. Information on using these security systems begins on page 1-31.

    SAFETY BELTS PRECAUTIONS

WARNING: All vehicle occupants must wear seat belts at all times. Seat belts and child restraints reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury to all occupants in the event of a collision or sudden stop. Without seat belts, occupants could get too close to an inflating airbag, hit the interior structure, or be thrown out of the vehicle. Properly worn seat belts significantly reduce these risks. Even with advanced airbags, occupants without seat belts can be seriously injured if the airbag deploys. Always follow the safety belt, airbag and passenger safety instructions in this manual.

WARNING: All persons in the vehicle must be properly restrained at all times, including infants and children. Never carry a child in your arms or on your lap while driving a car. The violent forces generated during the collision will tear the child from his arms and throw him against the inside. Always use a car seat that is appropriate for your child's height and weight, see page 1-31.

Pregnant women The use of a seat belt for pregnant women is recommended to reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident. When using the seat belt, the lap portion of the belt should be positioned as low as possible and snug across the hips, not across the abdomen. Consult your doctor for specific recommendations.

    B150C02A-AAT

Larger Children Children who are too large to be carried in child restraints should always occupy the back seat and use the available lap/shoulder belts. The hip section should rest comfortably on your hips and as low as possible. Periodically check the fit of the belt. The movement of the child may cause the belt to shift. Children can enjoy maximum safety in the event of an accident when they are fastened in the appropriate restraint system in the rear seat. If a larger child (aged 13+) must sit in the front seat, they must be restrained securely with an available lap/shoulder belt and the seat must be fully forward. Children under the age of 13 must be securely strapped in the back seat. NEVER place a child under the age of 13 in the front seat. NEVER place a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of a vehicle.

One person per belt Two people (including children) should never attempt to use only one seat belt. This can increase the severity of injuries in the event of an accident.

    B150G02A-AAT

Stay awake To reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident and to maximize the effectiveness of the restraint system, all occupants should be seated and the front seats should be in an upright position when the car is in motion. The seat belt will not provide adequate protection if the person is lying in the rear seat or if the front seat is reclined.

WARNING: Riding with a reclined seat increases the risk of serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision or sudden stop. The protection of your safety system (seat belts and airbags) is greatly reduced by reclining the seat. Seat belts must fit snugly across the hips and chest to work properly. The more the backrest is reclined, the more likely the occupant's hips will slide under the lap belt, causing serious internal injury, or the occupant's neck will hit the shoulder belt. Drivers and passengers should always sit far back in their seats, wearing the proper seat belts (see page 1-26) and with the seat backs up.

SAFETY BELTS - Front and rear 3-point system with retractor with lock - Fastenable Retractable, fused seat belts are fitted to the outer and center rear seats to facilitate the installation of child restraint systems. Hyundai strongly recommends that children always sit in the back seat. NEVER place a child seat in the front seat of a vehicle. This type of seat belt combines the features of an emergency locking retractor seat belt and an auto-locking retractor seat belt. To fasten the seat belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the metal tab into the buckle. You will hear an audible "click" as the tongue catches on the buckle. When not securing the child seat, the seat belt functions the same as the driver's seat belt (emergency locking retractor type). It automatically adjusts to the correct length only after you manually adjust the lap section of the seat belt so that it fits snugly around your hips.

*1) The warning pattern repeats 11 times with an interval of 24 seconds. If the driver's seat belt is fastened, the light will turn off after 6 seconds and the buzzer will stop immediately.

*2) The light will turn off after 6 seconds and the buzzer will stop immediately.

When the seat belt is fully extended from the retractor to allow the installation of a child seat, the seat belt operation changes so that the belt can retract but not extend (auto-lock retractor type). See page 1-37. NOTE: While the combination retractor provides the same level of protection for seated occupants in both auto lock and emergency lock modes, it is recommended that seated occupants use the emergency lock feature for added comfort. The auto-lock function is designed to facilitate the installation of a child seat. To switch from auto-locking to emergency-locking operation, allow the unfastened seat belt to fully retract.

    CHILD SAFETY SYSTEM

    B230A03A-AAT

Children traveling in a car should sit in the back seat and should always be properly restrained to minimize the risk of injury in the event of an accident, sudden stop or sudden manoeuvre. According to accident statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children are safer when properly buckled in the back seats than in the front seat. Older children not using a car seat must use one of the supplied seat belts. All 50 states have child restraint laws. You should know the specific requirements for your state. Child and/or infant safety seats must be properly adjusted and installed in the rear seat. Use a commercially available child seat that meets the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). For small children and infants, use a child seat or infant seat.

WARNING: o A child seat must be installed.

placed in the back seat. Never install a child or infant car seat in the front passenger seat. If an accident occurs and the passenger's side airbag deploys, it could cause serious injury or death to the infant or child in the seat. Therefore, child seats should only be used in the rear seat of the vehicle.

o As a seat belt or child seat can become very hot if left in a closed vehicle, check the seat cover and buckle before placing your child in it.

    !

Before you buy a particular child seat, make sure it fits your car seat and seat belts, and that it fits your child. When installing a child seat, follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer.

  • 1 FEATURES OF YOUR HYUNDAI32

! WARNING:!o Never carry a child in your arms or on your lap

while traveling in a vehicle. The violent forces generated during the collision will tear the child from his arms and throw him into the car.

o Never put the seat belt on yourself and your child. In a collision, the seat belt can dig deep into the child and cause serious internal injuries.

o Never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time. The car can become hot very quickly and cause serious injury to children inside. Even very young children can inadvertently cause the vehicle to move, become entangled in windows or block themselves or others in the vehicle.

o Never allow two children or two people to use the same seat belt.

o Children often twist and change positions incorrectly. Never let your child ride with the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. Always place and properly secure children in the back seat.

WARNING: o When the child seat is on

When not in use, store it in the boot or secure it with the seat belt so it won't be thrown forward in the event of a sudden stop or accident.

o If the airbag inflates, children could be seriously injured or killed. All children, including those too large to be transported in child seats, should travel in the back seat.

To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury: o Children of all ages are safer when

fastened in the back seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat could be severely hit by an inflating airbag, which could result in serious injury or death.

o Always follow the child seat manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.

o Always make sure that the child seat is properly secured in the car and that your child is securely fastened in the seat.

!o Never let your child get up or down

kneel on the seat or floor of a moving vehicle. In a collision or sudden stop, a child may be violently thrown against the vehicle interior and be seriously injured.

o Never use a baby carrier or child seat that "fastens" over the seat back as it may not provide adequate protection in the event of an accident.

o Seat belts can become very hot, especially when the car is parked in direct sunlight. Always check the seat belt buckles before fastening your child.

The purpose of the SRS is to provide the vehicle's driver and/or front passenger with additional protection over that provided by the seat belt system only in the event of a frontal collision of sufficient severity. The SRS uses sensors to collect information about the position of the driver and front passenger, whether the driver and front passenger are wearing seat belts, and the severity of the impact.

The driver's and front passenger's seat rail position sensors, which are installed in the seat rail, determine whether the seats are forward or rearward relative to the reference position. These seat belt buckle sensors determine if the driver and front passenger seat belts are fastened. These sensors allow SRS activation to be controlled based on how close the driver's seat is to the steering wheel, how close the passenger's seat is to the dashboard, whether seat belts are fastened, and how severe the impact is.

The advanced SRS offers two-stage airbag inflation control. The first stage level is designed for impacts of moderate severity. For more severe effects, a second degree is provided.

Depending on the severity of the impact, the seated position and the use of the seat belt, the SRSCM (SRS control module) controls the inflation of the airbag. Improperly wearing a seat belt can increase the risk or severity of injury in the event of an accident. In addition, your Hyundai is equipped with a front passenger classification system. The occupant classification system detects the presence of a passenger in the front passenger seat and deactivates the passenger front airbag under certain conditions. For more information, see "User Rating System" later in this section.
